Arsenal’s history one day at a time

This series takes a look at what was happening to Arsenal and in the world around them on this day at one point in Arsenal’s past.

Arsenal v Newcastle: the video

.

This is one of the days where it is difficult if not impossible to find a video of Arsenal playing and winning on the day in question – and I don’t like to put up films of the club losing. And there is a connection because Arsenal have played Newcastle on this day – I just can’t find the video. So this is Arsenal v Newcastle, and an Arsenal win, and with a very tenuous connection to 2 January.

You can find details of all our videos in date order on the Arsenal History Society blog. Just type AISA Arsenal History Society into your chosen search engine.

Portsmouth v Arsenal 2009: the video

On this day the league table before the game looked like this… and in passing it is interesting to note that nine out of the 20 clubs in the league in 2009 are no longer part of the Premier League.

Two extraordinary Arsenal videos: December 26 & 29

Apologies – changing family arrangements made it impossible for me to post the December 26 video, so here it is, along with the video for today, 29 December. If you want to see the whole list of videos day by day there is an index on the Arsenal History Society site. Just type “AISA Arsenal History Society” into your search engine and click on the link for “ARSENAL HISTORY SOCIETY FREE VIDEO COLLECTION

26 December 2000: Arsenal v Leicester

29 December: Arsenal score seven, and there’s an amazing commentary too

28 December 2001: Arsenal 2 Middlesbrough 1 – the video

28 December 2001: Arsenal 2 Middlesbrough 1.  League match 20 of the third Double season.  Middlesbrough took the lead but Pires and Cole turned the game around in the second half to make it three consecutive wins.

Arsenal hammer Chelsea on 27 December 2010

Arsenal on 24/25 December: the non-video

Until 1955 there were occasional games for Arsenal on 24 December. The very last of these was in 1955 when we lost 2-0 to Chelsea. From there on it was decided that there really was no market for the match – although the crowd of 43,022 was still very respectable.

Games on Christmas Day continued for one more year for Arsenal with the last game again being against Chelsea – a 1-1 draw away from home.

Thereafter, there have been no more.

However Boxing Day matches for Arsenal have continued until 2008 – and indeed Arsenal are in Boxing Day action once again this year – away to Norwich.

Obviously, there are no videos of Arsenal playing on 24 or 25 December, so these days will have to remain blank in our history of Arsenal through “on this day” videos. And I am sorry to say that it seems more than likely that the video for 26 December will be going up rather late in the day, as family matters have first call!

But hopefully, it will go up, sometime in the afternoon.

Meanwhile, you can read more about Arsenal’s history and see our complete collection of a video for almost every day of the year on the Arsenal History Society website. Just go to your search engine and type in “Arsenal History Society”.
