FOOTBALL’S RELATIONSHIP WITH HARMFUL GAMBLING ADVERTISING AND SPONSORSHIPS

Gambling with Lives is a charity set up by bereaved parents who have lost their children to suicide because of their gambling addiction.

Part of it is The Big Step, an advocacy project formed by people harmed by gambling.

The Big Step is campaigning for an end to harmful gambling advertising and sponsorship in football. Their petition has recently been signed by Gary Lineker and Peter Shilton.

You may have seen this BBC Sport article last week, featuring an open letter to 11 football clubs regarding direct gambling promotion on social media. Big Step is reaching out to supporters’ clubs like AISA to help protect children and those at risk of gambling addiction.

Normally, group walking events to football clubs with gambling sponsorship are used to raise awareness. This year, due to the pandemic, there will be a remote walking event in March. The aim is collectively to walk 1,137 miles.
